Being Liable For Wrongly Accusing Others In Business

What a funny situation this is. I recently encountered a situation where a company had alleged that they owned copyright to a piece of music I was using for one of my work which isn’t true as I have the full license from the record label that actually owns it. From what it appears they basically represent music composers and it looked like that composer literally copied the work from the artist that I got my music from. So there is a possibility that the company is simply ignorant about this. But that wouldn’t explain how they already acknowledged the first time that I was in the right.

But it makes you think how the company in general seems like they are jumping the gun and going full steam ahead in using various legal avenues to protect work that they don’t even own. Which makes me wonder, how much liability the company would have to endure if they made me go through all this legal process where in the end they are 100% in the wrong? I don’t think a simple sorry would suffice either since they have so much opportunity to make things right at the moment.

I assume they feel where if in the end they are wrong then there is no repercussion of sort. But similar to police officers arresting innocent people without any merit I would imagine they would have to pay a fine of sort afterwards. Shows the importance of always trying to make sure you got the right person.
