Being Able To See What You Are Buying

financial literacy

Kind of an interesting incident I saw today as I was walking with some friends that wanted to buy something to eat and so we just walked around a certain area. There was this over the counter falafel restaurant that they were interested in and so we went in.

Upon going in they were looking at the menu to see what they wanted to order. It looked like a one man operation type of business and since the place was new to all of us my friend asked the owner how big the falafels were as I suppose he wanted to know if the portion is too much or too little for him. The owner immediately comments that he can’t show him the size of it.

He thought that was a little ridiculous and then even asked if he had even a picture of the item. Again though, the owner said that there was no way of showing him the portion size. As a result, he just walked out of the restaurant saying how obviously the guy didn’t care about his business. He made a point too on how even just using his hands to roughly indicate the size would have been acceptable.

I guess if you are in the restaurant business this kind of thing puzzles me as there actually are a lot of businesses that do this. Just from a general point of view it’s probably good marketing to have pictures of your items or some kind of visual reference so that people can quickly determine what they would like to spend their money on.

Not only that, but like in this situation it could mean a lot of lost business by not giving the customer the ability visually imagine what the item would be like.
