Avoiding Substitute Purchases

I was talking to a friend today who lined up in the wee early morning at a store with the intent to buy a TV for bout $200 for his business. In fact, he intended to buy about three of them. However, he mentioned that by the time he lined up he realized that even though he thought he was early there were people still lining up four hours before him. He still stuck it out though.

When he actually got in the store the item was indeed all sold out. The interesting thing was I asked if he bought anything at all and he said he didn’t. What surprised me is many times for people who line up for that long they have a mentality that they don’t want to end up empty handed for having to wait so long and so they end up buying any deal that looks decent.

A good habit if you don’t want to waste money making last minute purchases that you didn’t do much research on. I suppose what helped for him was that it was a family event thing for him where he went with his wife too and so if anything they treated it as an activity for the day. He even joked that all he had to buy the whole day was a little breakfast. As I was telling him too, there is always Cyber Monday coming up.
