Usually when it comes to business transactions or partnerships it’s perfectly expected to have a balance where both parties are gaining something. For example, in exchange for one’s product or service you will give them money. But over the past month there were situations where it would have been great to get some extra help for some non-profit projects there were actually people that pitched their commercial offerings.
This ranged from people offering a percentage of discount for its services to people wanting the organization to brand itself in a way to show that the company was sponsoring them as if it was like a sports event. There is a time and place for these kinds of things. But usually for this particular situation people or organizations would help because they want to and then leave it up to the recipient on whatever way they wish to thank people.
To me trying to approach these types of scenarios as a business opportunity is inappropriate and it turns me off from working with those people if I see that. The exaggeration would be attending someone’s funeral and then going there to offer people a discount to go to your restaurant afterwards. In those cases, if you don’t genuinely believe in say the event or cause it’s best to save your salesmanship on something else more appropriate.
