Advertisement Disguised As Interest and Participation

One advice that people often give new entrepreneurs who are hungry to find new clients is to visit and participate in various communities where your product and service can be of value to. It just makes sense that your offerings will likely be in demand at such places. This is what got me thinking about that as today I saw a person from a company posting so many messages in an online community that of course relates to its service offerings.

Nothing wrong with that in general and it is probably a good idea to get to know as many people in your industry as possible. But what was kind of apparent was that the person didn’t seem to have a genuine interest in the community as opposed to advertising. Every post the person made would be followed up by asking people to check out their business. Literally every post and response would have to have some kind of reference to their service and offerings.

To me that does the opposite where it doesn’t get me interested in the person’s business but rather turned off. It’s one thing to hustle and another to essentially fake an interest in order to try and get a sale. It just comes across as very used car salesman-like. I’m almost inclined to say if you have to fake an interest than maybe you are in the wrong business.
