This was an interesting story I heard today about people trying to save money on its monthly bills. Every month they paid an individual to help clean up the outside of the property and didn’t think too much of it since the person was like a neighbor. However, recently one person decided to investigate into the billing. That brought up the question on why the person was charging taxes for his service as to their knowledge he was really just some guy doing this job as a side gig.
Here in BC as an example you are forced to collect taxes if you registered for things like a GST number or if you bill a certain amount annually. This little detail seemed imply that the person was simply collecting more money for himself it seems. This isn’t the first time I have heard of this as I have often seen a lot of smaller restaurants as an example charge taxes on their meals when they don’t even have a tax account. As you guess, they pocket the extra money themselves.
It’s really easy to check too such as how here in Canada you can simply visit the Canada Revenue Agency site to see if the business’s account even exists. So many things people do to try and take your hard earned dollar.
