A Business Heavily Dependent on Social Media Platforms Risk

There was an interesting story recently how apparently the company Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, was proposing to change its hate speech policy to allow people to express day harm to any leaders in Russia that promote the war in Ukraine. As a result of this and other factors, it seems like Russia decided to ban social media sites such as Instagram.

While for most people this would simply mean they can go elsewhere, there are a lot of people who have actually created businesses such as being an influencer primarily using those platforms. Being able to generate a large audience brings them sponsorship to the point where this is their job and livelihood. Just like that, with the ban of the platform virtually every influencer is Russia can pretty much say goodbye to their business.

This also happened in other countries where one that I remember is how India banned Tik Tok due to its ties with China in which they were having a dispute with. Similarly, people that used that as the means to create a business pretty much lost it all in one day. It’s probably the equivalent to a profitable stock investment turning to nothing overnight huh?

Now there are some people who would argue what those people do aren’t a job per se. But the bottom line is fundamentally they are running a business and it’s not exactly easy to bring it to a point where one can make a comfortable living out of it. I think the thing this shows is regardless of the platform or method you choose, when you reach a certain stage of success and stability it would be wise to start exploring other options as well as you never when things will end.
