There was actually a lot of news today in regards to some electronic vehicles that apparently caught on fire which then led to some other articles I read on how some countries like Poland are apparently banning Chinese EVS because the concern is how there are cameras on board and with that it’s constantly capturing things like images of your surroundings. Can you imagine if that data went to the government, for example, in China? There’s a lot of other types of equipment that could potentially use the media that you provide in some other way. For example, map development kind. The story I read the other day where the company Niantic was actually using all of the data that it’s players from the game Pokémon go provided to provide maps for AI robots is a good example of what one can do with user data in the future. I know for myself when it comes to a lot of devices nowadays, there are some things where I just don’t see the point in why you need all these smart features.
For example, if you’re buying something like a refrigerator, why do I need the refrigerator to have a camera or to be able to listen to the sound around me? I know one of the reasons is how people say this is supposed to make things more convenient. For example, if you walk by it’ll automatically open or lock up, but I just find it a little unnecessary and at the same time it has security issues. In my opinion, cars are a little trickier because nowadays a lot of cars have cameras on them where the purpose is to enable the driver to be able to see all around them. And with autonomous cars it’s kind of necessary because these vehicles need to be able to see where they’re going. You might have a map where it can determine where to drive, but in order to avoid things like obstacles or the unexpected weather you’re going to have some kind of eyes per se on the vehicles.
So can you truly get away from stuff like this? Funny enough that could actually be a business idea in the future. People making bare bone dumb devices kind of like phones. I know nowadays a lot of us want better cameras, more internet features, whereas I know there’s actually a market for phones that are the bare bones. For example, no internet as it is meant just to make phone calls and that’s supposed to be for security reasons. So I don’t doubt people could actually make a business out of that too. If people are concerned about security, would that be the case for things like vehicles as well? Cuz I can’t imagine people wanting to go back to something without vision cameras and all in the future if we want robot taxis and all.
