There was a lot of news this year on how the annual Celebration of Lights fireworks event is no more due to a lack of funding which made a lot of people disappointed of course. So, with the event gone just recently the mayor of Vancouver announced that he was going to propose a plan where the city will spend $2 million on a fireworks event this year as a way to fill the void. The justification it seems is how the event keeps the tradition alive and the Fireworks events often attract a lot of people which stimulates the economy.
This news didn’t sit well with a lot of people though because if the event is all of a sudden being funded with taxpayer money you bet people are going to start comparing it to other items that have been neglected. $2 million is a lot of money for a fireworks show too I was thinking. Thinking of it even from a personal point of view, I guess it’s like asking if you normally had a family tradition in attending a free festival of sort where this year it is no more, would you actually go out of your way and use your savings to host your own festival for tradition sake?
I think most people wouldn’t as they would have a “it was nice while it lasted” mentality. More than likely people will find other things to do. With that said, I think if the price tag proposed here was way lower then people would be inclined to accept it. Good luck trying to have a spectacle like what people are used to if the budget is low of course. If they actually had a realistic plan to make it all back or even turning it into a profit then no one should be against it with the circumstance.
