Treating Very Little Money As A Lot

I was thinking as the other day a person was playing a game where he was short on an item and told me to just spend his currency on the item as he has a lot of money in the game. As I looked at his total he only had about 380 credits and the item itself was 200. To me that is not a lot of money as that almost feels like a struggling to get by type of scenario. Fortunately this was just a game but it did make me think how that is kind of a bad financial habit to have.

It’s very similar to saying if you had $10 in your wallet then that means you can afford to buy that $10 movie ticket even though that means you would have zero dollars in your savings after. That style usually results in over spending with things like credit cards too as the mindset is usually more about if you have the funds available to spend then you should per se.

With the above example, for me personally I would probably consider having something like 3000 credits as a lot where that 200 would be a safe purchase financially in the big picture. That is probably super high for many but I think you should always strive to still have a lot of funds in the savings before deciding to spend your money on things you don’t truly need right away. As well, having a standard where if you make that large purchase you shouldn’t even be close to having zero dollars after the transaction.
