Spending Gift Card Balances First

So today I deposited an Amazon gift card I received into my account for future use. While I have no need to use it yet I thought it was kind of interesting how the site gave you an option to not use the gift card balance on your next purchase. Essentially, I could just opt to keep paying the items in full as if the gift card balance never existed. It made me wonder, why would you ever do this?

I know for myself, in the past there have been plenty of times where I lost the balance of my gift card due to it expiring. That was usually mostly due to things like getting a rebate in the form of a pre-paid credit card that not everyone accepted. So there, I would kind of just hold off to the point where sometimes I forget about it and it expires.

That is less likely to happen nowadays as for many gift cards here there is no such thing as an expiry date anymore. I do wonder why one would ever not want to spend their gift card or store credit balance right away as you are essentially losing money in almost every way by not doing so.
