Once A Year Spending Justification

financial literacy

With the Christmas shopping season almost coming to an end I have been hearing a lot of people who are definitely scrambling the last minute to try and get those gifts. One scenario was interesting as the person wanted to get a gift for a child but it was super expensive coming in at about $90. They couldn’t really afford it but the rationale was it was once a year. Then it was kind of funny as the person threw out the comment how they weren’t sure why they were do hesitant to spend that money even though again it is a once year thing.

The answer should be pretty straight forward where they are hesitant because they are already in a tough financial position where this will just make it worst. It makes you wonder though is it every truly reasonable to go into debt because it is a once a year type of event? I am just thinking how many different celebrations there are each year which is technically once a year. Birthdays, anniversaries…..heck even new year’s day.

People are more likely nowadays to think about if it is wise to say spend tens of thousands of dollars on a one day wedding instead of investing it in a home. Would spending a ton of money on once a year events be similar? I tend to believe if you can’t truly afford it then you shouldn’t pretend you can so to speak. Find alternative ways to celebrate instead.
