With racism being a huge topic it was interesting reading one story that has been going around about the film industry. Specifically Hallmark has been targeted where people were accusing the company of intentionally trying to use only Caucasian people. Even things like an interracial couples is allegedly an unwritten rule where it is strictly forbidden. The situation got worst it seems when the company publicly said they support the Black Lives Matter movement only for people to call them out on it by showing how they cast their shows.
But I thought this was an interesting point from bystanders where some people actually support the company to not care about being diverse just for the sake of doing so because at the end of the day it’s about making money for them. If they think having a cast full of white people is going to bring them the most success then in these people’s opinion they should do so. The attached comment to that as well is if people want to create shows with a diverse cast then they can create their own company to do just that and see how it goes. Basically implying the market wouldn’t support it.
That’s kind of an interesting argument where if you ran a business and let’s pretend you know for sure that adding some kind of diversity will indeed drop revenue due to the market not fully willing to accept whatever it is may be would you still do it? In this case I would imagine it’s not so much about making a profit as it is being a trendsetter. But again would you actually do it knowing that you could lose money?
