Making Restaurant Servers Earn Shifts Through Public Reviews

This was kind of new as I was at the restaurant the other day where everything seemed fine and it was time to pay the bill. At the end the server was asking if we could leave a review as apparently the management utilizes customer reviews to help determine who should get more shifts at the restaurant. Seems okay I suppose, but what the review request was actually the Google Reviews page where one would have to post publicly on their personal account. That made it a little odd and generated the discussion on how the server was being treated like a salesmen at a retail store where they get tracked based on sales. Seems like something that shouldn’t be placed on servers right?

It makes you think if that is a smart or bad thing to do for those positions. Imagine working at a fast food restaurant where your role is to literally cook the food. Your worth isn’t so much tied to how well you do your job but rather whether or not customers leave say a glowing review on a website for the business. It’s almost like treating you as the sales and PR worker. On one hand it makes sense for the business to want those who are generating the most positive customer experiences. But it equally doesn’t make sense if the person is playing a logistical role in the whole operation in general.

Maybe in a very small business this would make sense as everyone is putting multiple hats on. But for this case where It was a large restaurant chain it almost comes across as a scare tactic such as how in some places people must make a certain sales quota or they get fired.
