Going All In Early In A Career Or Exploring First

The most traditional path to take in order to earn a living is to go to school where we will master our field to then get a stable job that we will work until retirement. That’s not how it works in reality for everyone of course. What got me thinking about this was I was watching a documentary about how in Japan there are people that go into Sumo Wrestling as their profession of choice. As you can imagine they start training very early on which involves eating a ton of food in order to gain excess weight.

Because of the lifestyle it was described how many don’t live too long for health reasons and that because one dedicated their entire young adulthood training to be the next best sumo wrestler if they don’t make it that they are done. They don’t really have additional trade skills to make an alternative living and the excess weight is most likely a disadvantage for most traditional jobs. So should you explore as many different career paths as possible during your early years? Or should you just commit to one thing?

That’s so tricky as I can see it going both ways where a person who is absolutely insane and passionate will eventually get to where they want. Then again not everyone can make it in many places so that could be a mistake. Nowadays though when I watch things such as motivational and business videos gurus often tell people to start exploring careers and ventures at an early age. Essentially, don’t be so uptight where you must lock yourself in to one thing now.

I tend to think regardless you should always have some kind of side hustle if you want to call it that. That doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t jump into whatever that may be but planting a seed for something else to potentially grow can only help if you manage your time wisely. Even as a sumo wrestler I would have probably done something else too. Funny enough, if you could really eat that much there are even competitive eaters that make a decent living. Like there that to me seems like a perfect dual career that compliments each other and you can easily do on the side.
