Experiencing Success With Work You Don’t Care About Initially

This was kind humorous as I was speaking to a person who experienced great success recently as he received a fairly decent job from a large company that kept him working for days and he will forever be known as being a key worker on this highly recognized project. But funny enough, he wasn’t too thrilled about it as tying his name down to this project meant he couldn’t work on other items which was his primary focus. There are so many people that would kill for the opportunities he had as this is one of those stories of people getting stuff without even trying much.

It almost makes you wonder if in these situations you should immediately pivot your professional goals knowing that you do it well enough for so many people to want to hire you and to validate it people are telling you they tried years with no success. Would you ever truly just change focus just like that even if it was clearly not what you were originally passionate about?

It’s a common story where people changed careers by accident such as having to temporarily replace someone originally. From a business point of view, I guess it makes sense as long as you can put your pride aside. Imagine studying for something over the span of four years just to then do something that required no in-depth training as you were just naturally good for the role. Hard pill to swallow for many knowing you invested all that time and money for nothing. Then again, if the new path is trying to throw money at you then it could easily more then make up for it and allow you to expand your opportunities faster this way too.
