I was having a conversation recently with a person who seemed to have difficulties finding work due to a past car accident. While he used to do a lot of physically demanding work like construction this accident has permanently inured him to the point where he can’t do that line of work anymore. To make it worst he never really had a backup skill or career as his whole life revolved around that profession an industry.
So it made me wonder do you ever plan for future careers in case you have a physical handicap all of a sudden? For example sake let’s say you now can’t walk and are stuck having to use a wheelchair. Would you actually plan ahead of time to do a job where you sit in front of the computer as an example or just worry about it if the time ever comes? For myself I always strive to find ways where doing the work once can somehow generate residual income in the future.
While the intent isn’t a form of preparation in case I can’t work anymore I suppose in many ways it does help should the situation ever arise. The key is to try and find ways to generate multiple streams of income when you are healthy and able body I guess you can say. Although career changes can happen for the better too where a common story I hear are sports athletes getting injured and becoming renowned chefs as an example.
