Dismissing Personal Opinions And Values For Business Reasons

People often tell you to stand up for what you believe in and to never do things that conflict with your values. Sounds like the way to go in many cases. I was thinking recently though as I saw a person who did just that in every way. For the most part I always saw it as just an opinion and it should be no big deal. But recently he apparently got overlooked for a lot of potential business opportunities that went to his competitors instead. It would appear that being too vocal made a lot of companies fear that he might be too controversial and so they went elsewhere.

That is the true reality in many cases when it comes to business and so many times people simply try and keep everything separate such as their personal beliefs in life or politics because they can’t allow it to get in the way of business. For example, even if someone truly disliked a company for its views on certain issues that are unrelated they will overlook it because it’s what’s best for business.

If you did that would you view it as being inauthentic to yourself or do you view it as the right thing to do for the business? I suppose it’s no different than the example of like a celebrity promoting a product or service they don’t really believe in just for the money. This is probably an easier question if you already made it in life per se financially where you can be as picky as you want. But for the smaller guys it’s always a tougher choice.
