Cash Only Businesses

There was a new restaurant that opened up in my neighborhood and today I decided to try it out. While I usually avoid dining out except for special events and gatherings, I figured that this was one of those things where you want to get to know your local businesses.

It seemed like a regular restaurant with nothing too fancy. As always my intent was to use a credit card for the purchase. During the meal, I was just looking around the restaurant and I noticed a sign that mentioned how the place took cash only.

The person I was with was saying too how lots of restaurants are like this for dubious reasons. While obviously everyone is not like this, essentially what a lot of restaurants that accept cash only do is they charge you regular prices including the tax like normal. Only difference is that a lot of these businesses don’t actually report that to the tax man and instead pocket it for themselves since the cash payment is hard to prove.

I usually try to avoid cash only places unless it is a type of venue of sort that you would expect that like some kind of night market event or a corner store. I understand perfectly too on how setting up say a credit card merchant account can be expensive for a business. At the same time, I guess it can really help your image.

I can see your point, but please consider this before passing judgement…

A merchant may not wish to pay the per transaction fee of 30, 40 or more cents for each sale, AND a percentage to the credit or debit card processor which can be as much as 4% or more of the total sale.

You see this happens a lot with smaller family run businesses because often their margins are so low on the low priced items they sell that much of their profit would be eaten up by a multi billion dollar per year company which does nothing but manage the transaction of funds, a transaction which has been handled quite well for centuries by a simple transfer of notes and coins *for free*. Personally I can see why many of them would feel cheated under such a lopsided system. In my view we should all use cash as much as possible to avoid this, at the very least unfair burden on our economy, and at worst a theft of the productivity of hard working people. Not to mention the tracking of all of our purchases and frequents. Just some food for thought. 😉

    Interesting points Kman.

I do perfectly understand the high fees associated with credit card transactions. As a consumer overall I think a credit card is more beneficial. Not for restaurants with this example, but a credit card can give you more protection such as a merchant giving you the wrong item or intentionally mislead you about a sale.

Not sure if I have ever seen a restaurant do this, but one way that stores get passed the high credit card transaction fees is to offer its own version of a credit card. That’s one of the reasons you see stores push those cards so much.
