Being A Politician To Start A Business

Today I read that the former Prime Minister of Canada is apparently creating a production company, which has generated some controversy. People naturally wonder whether it’s ethical for someone who held such a high political office to leverage those connections for business. The concern is whether they’re using insider knowledge to secure funding or advantages that others don’t have access to.

It makes you think, because many artists and production companies struggle to get by, while some argue that people enter politics partly to build networks and then cash in on those connections once they leave office. It’s similar to how high-level executives at large corporations often use their contacts and resources to launch successful businesses afterward.

So it makes you wonder if becoming a politician is actually a legitimate — albeit unconventional — path to entrepreneurship. I know ‘politician’ is basically a dirty word for a lot of people, but many of them do seem to come out with significant wealth, power, and influence. While it’s hard to prove exactly how any one person made their money, the pattern is hard to ignore and it definitely raises questions about whether this is a fair way to build a business career.
