I’m not sure why for this month specifically I have seen so many people online trying various things to raise money for charity. Maybe it’s the summer holiday and people have more free time to donate themselves. It is kind of neat to see the different ways that people are trying to attract a particular audience. In a nutshell, these are pretty much all the things I have seen people perform in an effort to raise money:
Offer A Service – This is probably the oldest and most common practice I have seen and goes back to the old car wash ideas. It’s almost like a regular job except for the most part people know that you are doing it for a good cause and will donate generously or your services based on that.
Selling A Product – Lemonade stand anyone? This is another method that is pretty common amongst the younger crowd. I suppose people walking up to you and selling chocolate bars would fall under this category too.
Changing Your Physical Appearance – The first thing that comes to my mind are people who are willing to shave their head if they reach a certain quota of funds raised. I must say, this one sure has a lasting impact if you are willing to go the distant. One of the more funny ways to raise money though.
Subjecting Yourself To Embarrassment – A pie in the face? Getting pegged by water balloons? This is one of those “can’t think of anything else†methods I think as the natural assumption is that many enjoy seeing someone else get punished in a playful way.
Eating Contest – I have never actually seen one live before. But, I have read many times where some people are willing to eat a stack load of food where every piece they eat means more food for the charity. Sometimes the event is a little more of a direct competition where the winner gets more money for his/her charity based on a pool of funds.
Going On A Date – I saw this one just recently where a group of single male and females were auctioning themselves off for charity. As you may expect, the agreement is that the highest bidder gets to go on a date with the bachelor or bachelorette.
Physical Marathon – The last time I did this was in elementary school where we all had to run around the school in an effort to raise money for charity. Essentially, the more laps we ran the more we could collect from our donors who offer to donate X amount of money for each lap that we ran. Of course, many adults do this too.
Video Game Marathon – This one is not as common I’d say. A video game marathon is basically people that stay up for a long period of time doing nothing but playing video games. At the same time, the public can watch them in real time and donate as they wish. Basically they are trying to provide entertainment in order to raise donations.
Blogathon – As the name may imply, this involves bloggers who stay up blogging all night in an effort to raise money for charity. From what I have seen, people just write about anything with some sticking to their personal topic of interest.
There are probably more, but these are the ones I have seen. I didn’t include things such as tv game shows or celebrities going on a reality show. Either way, there is something for everyone.
