Bad Strategy of Trying To Hide Your Star Workers

It’s not surprising that when companies find a rockstar employee they want to do everything in their ability to keep them as it takes so much time and money to find the right talent. But it was interesting hearing a discussion on how some businesses try and retain talent by hiding them and their success. For example, while many would celebrate an employee’s success right away and would be happy to share it to the world in these cases the business would intentionally never highlight their accomplishments publicly for fear a competitor will see it and convince them to leave.

Well, that kind of backfired as to the worker they simply saw it as the employer never valued their contribution compared to how they treated and celebrated others and so it made it very easy for them to leave for the competition. I personally always doing that crazy because you should try and retain talent by rewarding and recognizing their great achievements with ample opportunity to grow. Otherwise, it’s like those abusive relationships where one keeps downplaying a person’s success as a way to control them as if they aren’t valuable enough to be anywhere else.

This ironically probably costed them more money too not only with the loss productivity of their star but now the have to find someone new who hopefully does just as good. You have to do the work to keep your talent and constantly trying to hide them like a caged rat isn’t the way to go.
