Working Just For The Perks And Benefits

With all that news of Air Canada employees going on strike recently and flight attendants showing how little money they make they generated conversations from people on the outside on how the low wage is justified because it’s not a job that requires a lot of experience similar to working at a fast-food restaurant. However, another remark that people brought up is how it’s low pay but there are the perks of free travel which is supposed to be a huge benefit and attraction to the job.

That made me think if there are actually people who work at a job more for the perks and benefits versus the actually salary. I have seen two examples of this such as people literally working at a supermarket part time as the motivator is to have access to store discounts as it’s a place they have to shop at all the time anyways. So working there part time gives them extra income and plus they save a lot on groceries with the employee discounts.

Another time I heard people do this is working at electronic stores as there are often a lot of vendor incentive for employees to learn and use its products as they are more likely to sell them as a result. For example, being able to buy expensive computer parts like processors at a huge discount. Ideally you would get the best of both worlds of course. But it’s not unheard of for people to focus on the perks instead. Especially if it isn’t your career job per se.
