When The Responsible Choice Costs Too Much Money

financial literacy

Today while walking I heard some people talk about how they were debating about various methods of commuting around town where one of the main goals was to save money. Typically taking public transit should be way cheaper but less convenient than owning your own vehicle. But in this case the person was expressing how when you factor in the gas and mileage the car is actually a lot cheaper than say taking the bus or the rapid transit. So because of that they decided to use a car.

I was thinking about this and even from my own calculations based on gas prices the car is actually a lot cheaper in many ways. However, that is not factoring in the total expense in using a car such as the insurance you would have to pay. Add that up then the transit usually comes out cheaper. But is it cheap enough to justify the inconvenience of sort at times? People often say you should go for the greener options when you can. But would you if it meant making you more stressed about your finance?

It’s not so straight forward in that case. I think at times like this it just makes sense to go with what actually works for your budget. That probably isn’t a very popular opinion but at the end of the day you do need to be taken care of. If anything it should be up to say the city to have more incentives and not make it a burden for you to go with the greener options per se. They work in many cases such as all the incentives that are given for people to get electric cars often have the funds depleted pretty quickly. I guess you can say at times you have to hold out for the good deals even in these cases.
