Unnecessary Extra Steps For The Customer

I know a lot more places nowadays are trying to keep all records for customers digitally which includes not even giving people physical cards as one can just show some kind of digital file for verification. But today it made me wonder at times if organizations are implementing extra steps that aren’t necessary if they are migrating. For example, today I went to the suspension bridge where I have an annual pass and it’s all digital. While they do require you to still have say a print out or digital copy of your barcode, apparently the staff can just look it up with your phone number to verify. It makes you wonder, why don’t they just have a system where it will automatically pull up the person’s data upon entry instead?

My only assumption is they just never bothered to update the whole system and so regardless if you have everything digitally stored it’s still operating as if you are entering with some kind of physical ticket or card. It would make sense as it is a tourist attraction and those people would always have to purchase tickets to enter. But it makes you wonder how much time they would save as well if the system was expedited for those that aren’t provided physical tickets.

I guess a way to think about it is imagine a restaurant requiring someone to order everything digitally such as inputting your selections from some device. Regardless, they still having to get you to show it to them which they then input into say the ordering system that goes to the kitchen. Like there, imagine how much more efficient it would be if it just went straight from the device to the kitchen. You could even have the server help the table to do so versus adding the extra step as if they have to take everything down with a pen and paper.

In some ways it negates the time saving by not fully running as system like that if you are insisting people use things digitally in these instances.
