Selling Items As Part of A Donation Strategy

While doing my usual grocery store walkthrough there was this sign advertising a sale coming up and apparently this was being done for charity. In this case they were having a sale as usual but now they indicate that for each item sold they would donate a certain amount of cash to charity. For example, buy a pineapple for $2.99 and they will donate $4 to the charity. They definitely aren’t making up the donation amount from selling the products. But it was kind of smart I thought versus just straight up donating cash.

Here they create an opportunity for people to be aware of the business and at the same time possibly become regular customers if they are happy with the purchase. I would imagine most people would love to donate this way where they could buy something they may have been looking for anyways and in turn that gives the charity money. It’s almost like shopping with a cashback credit card where you get money back for purchases you were going to make anyways.

I guess the main drawback would be in these instances you probably don’t get much of an option in terms of which charity gets the money as it’s usually the business that decides. But from a business point of view it’s surprising that I don’t see more people trying these types of direction when it comes to donating to causes.
