Online Reddit Communities Against Loblaws

This was a fascinating read where apparently a group of people on the site reddit has a community of people who are calling for the boycott of all Loblaw supermarkets in Canada due to thigs such as pricing. The immediate remark from many is how so many of the supermarkets here are actually owned by Loblaws and many times they actually do have cheaper prices than the competitors due to their size. But in this case I was wondering, if you are the executive for a large company like this would you actually treat this very seriously?

I know many times big companies tend to brush off these types of voices as simply a “vocal minority” as business will go on. In many ways, most people don’t actually pay too much attention to the news when it comes to shopping for groceries so I can’t see this having an immediate big impact on the company. There are quite of few times of course where an online campaign like this seemed to have generated so much press and backlash that companies have no choice but to respond.

It makes you think if it’s a good idea regardless for companies now to have at least someone monitoring and communicating with customers in these ways to try and alleviate issues ahead of time. You may be surprised at how positive it can be when people see interactions with people who actually work for the companies in question with a high-ranking position. Granted they will probably need some good PR senses and actually be ale to relate to the average person.
