This was a surprise today as the company Niantic, who developed the widely popular Pokémon Go game, is apparently in talks to sell its gaming division for $3.5 Billion to a company called Scopely. I happen to play their games for fun too and this got me to think as news was spreading around it fast amongst the player base where many people were expressing how they were holding off investing anymore in the game in case the purchase goes through. The fear is the game will be change to heavily value profits and hence making it unenjoyable.
Regular consumers are savvier nowadays in reading basic business news like this which can greatly affect their spending habits in these games. It’s almost like investors reacting to news on a stock market to determine if one should buy or sell. For myself it does make me a little hesitant to invest too much even though I primarily play it for free.
It shows too for these types of entertainment investment it literally could shut down the next day. So it may not be wise to treat it like some collectors card versus simply entertainment like watching a movie in the theaters.
