There was a lot of news today on how the company Niantic, that is best known for creating Pokémon Go, has sold its gaming division for $3.5 billion US. The company that has acquired this is called Scopely which has generated controversy as it is owned by the Saudi government. You would think this is just a normal business transaction, but what was interesting was how so many people brought up the point that the cultural values in Saudi Arabia Is different with one point being there are harsh rules against LGBTQ individuals. So will that mean any reference to those will not be welcomed even though the game is global?
That’s nothing new in general such as how movies made in America often have scenes censored for the audience in China as an example. It’s interesting though as most business, like here, express how they are still committed to retaining the product’s experience and all. But it’s clear certain things simply won’t fly with a different ownership.
Do you ever feel any responsibility to continue your product’s legacy per se after a sale? Or will you just take the money and run as it’s not yours anymore?
