Making Excuses For Tip As A Fee Takara Sushi Example

This was a new one I never heard of before of businesses trying to force customers to pay a tip regardless of say the service quality. I was at a restaurant called Takara Sushi to celebrate my niece’s birthday and an extra person decided to show up which resulted in us having to add an extra chair to the table. No big deal for most places as long as people fit. But at the end something was weird as they tried to tip themselves $30 on a $180 bill during the payment process.

After getting them to fix it, the waitress mentioned they charged a 15% mandatory tip because we had an extra person. I never heard of that before. If anything, they should welcome having more people as the bill was bigger. This of course got some reactions on people saying it was a rip off and that they wouldn’t be returning.

Out of curiosity, I was reading the reviews online and sure enough it seems like this was an issue of waitresses allegedly demanding for a tip or automatically trying to tip themselves at say 20%. I’m guessing that isn’t a coincidence based on our experience. It’s just kind of incredible still when you see people with the mentality that tips are mandatory. Like here, I wouldn’t doubt that they lose more business this way.
