Kony Video And Invisible Children

Kony Video And Invisible Children

financial literacy

Today I was just surfing around and noticed for some odd reason various videos on the web were titled as “Kony” or “Koney 2012” and I was wondering what the heck it was about as it didn’t seem like it had anything to do with the content I was watching. This of curse made me research to find out what this was about. Eventually, it lead me to this video which explained everything:

This video almost had me agree with it in almost every way until I saw this small part on how you can donate money and get these kits to help promote the cause. That immediately made me wonder where the money is going to. I did read some information at links such as this at http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=12429 where it appeared to list how much the video makers were making. Seems like the organization keeps a lot of the funds themselves in a way.

It always makes me wonder when people say you can help them by giving money and then receiving kits as like in this case I would think if you were to support a cause like this then the entire focus should be about getting people to spread the word. I have no doubt though that a ton of people will probably act on it emotionally without thinking too much.

This is interesting though where if anyone doubted how much of an impact you can have with some clever social media techniques that this should show that as long as you push the right buttons you can get so many people to react and participate. If I was to really be a skeptic, like how some people are labeling it as a scam of sort, with the way this video was created it almost feel like this Kony person is kind of insignificant already where it is trying to be setup to the point where when the guy is “captured” the organization can then claim a huge victory to increase a bigger following. Course, that is just random thoughts just based on various parts that felt like it was sensationalized as opposed to giving out raw facts(Which I know would bore most people).

Overall though, the safe thing as always when you are a little skeptical is to support with your effort and not your wallet I say. Seeing sites like this http://invisiblechildrenstore.myshopify.com/ where they have so many merchandise for sale just gives me a bad impression personally if this is supposed to be a non profit organization.
