There were these clips going online today of the professional wrestler Hulk Hogan going public on which US presidential candidate and party he is voting for which as expected immediately created division amongst his fan base. He then did interviews on how he normally stays away from politics because as an entertainer one wants to cater to as much people as possible. But after the recent assassination attempt, he felt he needed to say something. He emphasizes how it has always been a business decision to not talk about politics and then implies that it was a cowardly choice. At the same time, almost everyone in the entertainment business keeps their distance from politics too.
I guess the other argument is many times when people choose to consume entertainment products they want politics to stay away as they just want to enjoy the experience. So in that regards perhaps it is simply good business to give customers what they want. An escape from the everyday conflicts and concerns. Should it be considered as simply part of the business for one to not express political views in the same vein of how many businesses try and not favour one demographic over the other?
A public figure like that has a different set of circumstances too as the level of scrutiny against one isn’t the same as someone working a traditional job and having more flexibility to separate their work and personal life when it comes to personal choices like these. Either way, you can expect to lose a huge chunk of your customer base with just the mention of anything political.
