Well, this was a fascinating read where in Australia apparently there is this app called “Giggle For Girls” that was intended to be a female only platform as it is supposed to provide a safe space of sort for women to share their thoughts. While niche businesses like these usually means you are alienating a large part of the population, it could help one to stand out as well. So things got weird for the business when a person who was originally born as a man decided to sign up for the app. Through automated screening based on things like a picture, the app decided to approve his account. After manual review though, apparently the person was removed ands o a lawsuit for discrimination was started.
Long story short, the transgender individual won as the judge found the person was indirectly discriminated against. There were apparently some statements as well such as saying when it comes to labelling what a woman is, the judge apparently said one’s sex is “changeable and not necessarily binary”. This is probably not the type of thing a business owner would think about in terms of create a specific nice type of business huh?
It makes me wonder if this would apply to other things such as if there is an app that is supposed to only be used by say a vegetarian can someone who is not one but says they are as they just want to use the app be allowed to? Again, this is not the type of thing I think most people would anticipate in terms of a business challenge.
