I was reading today about the TikTok ban in the US and how apparently it is being proposed that if the company wanted to stay doing business in the US it would have to give up maybe fifty percent of its income to the US. The reasoning was apparently the app needs the US to maintain any kind of real value. I know the app has been banned in places like India and funny enough it isn’t even allowed in China itself.
Imagine you were the business TikTok. Would you be inclined to take the offer as it is better than nothing per se? In this case you would still make millions each year. I know there would be many as well who would simply walk out of principle. I suppose it really depends if it is truly all about money or if there is a bigger purpose for the business. If it is just about the money then it would make sense to treat it like some regulation on companies in a specific industry of sort. Because there is a factor on how in China most North American social media apps are banned as well.
I can’t see the Chinese government actually approving that agreement though. But it’s an interesting situation to be in for such a large company.
