Factoring In Personal Beliefs Before Hiring

People often suggest that when you are at work you leave all your personal life details outside as it is no place to get into say heated debates about subjects as you are their to service the customer or client. But what got me thinking is how nowadays many employers actually sift through people’s social media accounts to get an idea of the candidate and whether or not there are red flags. For example, if a company has a strong belief about a certain issue and the candidate publicly denounces that same group then you can bet they will pass.

On a surface level that sounds like discrimination. But at the same time this isn’t about say a person preferring apples over oranges versus a company’s value alignment. So with that, I suppose people need to consider how much of their personal beliefs they want to put out there publicly as it isn’t just celebrities that need to worry about really old comments that can come back years later.

I know for myself how one treats others is a big factor on whether or not I would want to work with them professionally as I can easily see those same habits transferring into the workplace.
