Digitizing All Your Old Paper Records or Not

Today I was notified to try and find a contract that was from years back for a contract I worked on where everything was still done by paper primarily. As you can imagine, that means pulling out the folders and going through the files manually to try and locate it. Funny enough, I would then have to scan it and send it which makes me wonder, should you just digitize everything you have for the sake of record keeping and not having to go through everything like this when needed?

I can see the positive in the sense of making life easier when a situation like this arises. At the same time, I suppose some people could argue having more copies digitized can be an increase chance of say people potentially taking your files in the future where with these paper contracts they would have to physically take them somehow.

As well, I don’t really have a commercial style scanner to go through everything quickly which I suppose is another reason I haven’t personally done so. Video are kind of the same where some people actually spend their time digitally archiving all their old media that is on physical tapes just incase the tape wears out for some reason. But are old paper records like these worth it if it is only maybe once in a lifetime you have to do it?
