Creating Talent Versus Trying To Recruit Them

I was reading some philosophies of different company leaders recently that talked about how one of the most important things they think of in terms of running a company is to have a process where you can develop and promote talent within. If one day you need a new manager there should be someone internally available. Even if you bring in contractors, they should be seen as potential talent that will actually become an employee.

Not a lot think that way as it’s mostly about getting people to maintain an operation versus actually fostering a talent’s growth. If anything, most would only focus on say a person already in some upper management or an executive role. It only make sense to be able to foster internal talent. I think that is one of the reasons why companies like McDonalds have been successful as they can literally train people from ground up to do the basic jobs while offering lots of flexibility and paths to grow.

I know for myself way back that’s why I left a company as there didn’t seem to be anything else to grow into as they also focused in trying to take talent from other companies. If it’s not something you think about from the start maybe you should.
