A person was telling me an interesting choice that she made where she preferred to do low level work versus a high profile one as she found that in doing low level work she actually ended up with the same money as working in a more high profile position. Her reasons were pretty straight forward as while you get paid less to do lower profile stuff you often have to spend more to be able to do higher profile work. Example, expensive clothes, transportation, etc.
I guess another way to look at it is that a businesses that brings in $1000 where your expense in running it is nothing compared to a business that brings in $10,000 while having $9000 in expenses is virtually the same in the end in terms of what you end up with. From that perspective I suppose it makes sense. Although, in some cases it would make sense to go with the second route. The reason is pretty simple as most likely even if cash wise it ends up the same you probably have more assets too which ultimately means more money.
Example, all those clothes you had to buy or say a computer to work with. I suppose it heavily depends if you are aiming more for a self employed or nine to five type of lifestyle too.
