I was thinking as recently there was this festival that I thought which would be interesting to participate in as they were specifically looking for projects that I actually did but the catch was they wanted money to be considered. I actually wasn’t too clear as to the exact type of work they were looking for and so I inquired if I could give them something quick to review to see if it even qualifies.

Funny enough the answer they gave me back was essentially there was no way to do so which meant you literally had to gamble money with them. While I would usually stay away from things like this I decided to try it anyways as I wanted to support the arts. Turns out recently that I got a message saying it didn’t qualify which meant I essentially lost about $50 or so with this. Who knows what the reasoning was too right?

This scenario can be very common such as competitions and even so called award sites offering the chance to participate for a fee. Many are legitimate of course but like with my example you are probably better off investing that in things that you can guarantee will make your endeavors better such as maybe getting new equipment or simply as a marketing expense.

Just as a silly but common example if your intent was to get exposure by entering a competition for $100 you could probably get a ton of exposure by offering $100 for free if people do something. It’s almost like you are just reversing the situation to guarantee that you will get something out of it huh? Just a different way of thinking how to invest your money for the same intended purpose if it was about exposure.
