Today I went to volunteer my time to potentially help some students where clearly my mindset as this was an environment where people are trying to learn so you don’t expect things to be like what you would see in the working world. As I arrived early the students were surprised and as a result it kind of added pressure to them to get things done on time. The funny thing was as they were setting up and I waited outside I could hear them saying how they need to do various things to look professional.

One example was a person was instructed to go outside to talk to me in order t make me feel comfortable. You could even hear them debating about that where the person was asking why they need to do that. Eventually he came out and tried to talk to me as a result. To be humorous as well as lightening the mood I just told him that I actually heard them say that. They even tried to make the whole waiting room setup like an actual studio too as if they are prepared for hundreds of people.

It kind of got me thinking how at times depending on your target audience you may not even need to do things so formally like this even in business. That’s why many times I feel a small business can get away with being the “normal guy” as in many ways people have the understanding that you aren’t a big corporation that spends millions of dollars a month. So if your customers/target audience doesn’t really mind it can be a productive idea to just do what works at times. Like the above example they spent way more energy than necessary.

Although that is good to see that they were actually trying and had the thought to do so. But if it isn’t necessary and can save you a ton of money and stress then no need in my view.
