Apparently what happened was my nephew kept insisting that he wanted a whopper junior instead. As well, with things like extra cheese and bacon. Now the thing to keep in mind was that the whopper junior isn’t on sale and was like two dollars. The whopper sandwich on this sale day was two dollars as well but it is much larger. My dad then insisted that he should get the whopper instead. My nephew reluctantly agreed and ended up getting the whopper with extra cheese and bacon.

When they brought back the food I asked my nephew why he didn’t want the better valued item. He was saying how he couldn’t finish the whopper as it was too big. He was always taught that he shouldn’t ever waste food. That made sense. I then tried to explain to him about the concept of value in this case. Example, basic explanation on what my dad was thinking on how for the same price you can get pretty much more of the same product. He was insistent though that if you can’t finish it then you should get the smaller one even if it costs more.

So I then asked him this. If he says he can’t finish the other burger because it is too large then why not ask if he can split that bigger burger in half? Basically, he can eat half of it which would be like that junior sized one and someone else can take the other. He kind of froze there for a second and in a light-bulb moment type of fashion he was like “Oh yeah”.

The funny thing is I have actually seen this with like adults in many circumstances. Example, there could be like a large bulk item that is on sale which is the same price as this smaller package. Like there, people would still opt to get the smaller one because they know it is too much for them. My default way of thinking is to immediately think how I can share the rest of the item with someone else. Like in the case of buying grocery items this can often result in two people splitting the cost where it’s like you both got a tremendous deal. Like in the case of the burger it would have been like my nephew getting the junior burger for like one dollar. Don’t forget to share as it can also mean saving a lot more money for everyone too.

I saw an interesting scenario today that involved my dad bringing my little nephew to a Burger King as he wanted to treat him to one of those whopper sandwiches as on Wednesdays they are a lot cheaper.
