I was thinking today as I was walking by the supermarket\u2014there was a lot of Halloween candy out already. It was the typical stuff you\u2019d see: various bundles with Reese\u2019s Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey bars, and all that. What I found interesting was how many of them were already priced as if they were clearing them out, even though Halloween isn\u2019t here yet.<\/p>\n
It makes you wonder whether they do that intentionally from the start. I know grocery stores often do this with fruits and vegetables\u2014when a big shipment comes in, they price it low right away to move as much inventory as possible. Then, once they\u2019ve sold down the stock to a comfortable level, they raise the price for the rest of the week. It\u2019s safer for them than pricing everything high and risking having to discount even more later when the product is about to expire.<\/p>\n
So, it made me wonder if candy companies use a similar strategy with Halloween chocolate. They bring in huge shipments and sell at a discount early on\u2014still making a profit, just not as much\u2014then raise prices closer to Halloween to maximize profit with less risk of being stuck with excess inventory they\u2019d have to deeply discount later.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s actually a pretty interesting approach to inventory control, if that\u2019s what they\u2019re doing. When I worked in retail selling electronics, we didn\u2019t have that issue since nothing expired, so it was more about timing and bundling. But with food, finding deals is fascinating. You\u2019d think the best prices would only come after the holiday, but with these early shipments, it seems you actually have two windows to get the best deals\u2014right at the beginning and right at the end.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
