People buy movies there, thinking they own them just like a physical copy. But recently, Sony announced it’s ending its license agreements with some distributors. As a result, many customers are about to lose access to the movies they paid for. The terms of service make it clear there’s no guarantee you’ll keep those purchases forever.

It’s a stark reminder that with digital content, you’re often just renting, not owning. This raises a real question for collectors: is it worth investing heavily in digital media when you don’t truly own it? I think physical copies like DVDs and Blu-rays are far safer in the long run, even though they’re getting harder to find in stores. This situation echoes what happened with Blockbuster. They dismissed Netflix and the shift to digital streaming, only to watch it become a billion-dollar industry. Streaming makes sense for monthly access to new content, but when it comes to owning something permanently — especially as a collectible — digital feels risky.

I’ve grown wary of this trend across the board. Many software products now follow the same model, like Adobe’s subscription service. You don’t own the software anymore — once your subscription ends, you lose access. Sure, you miss out on updates with the old one-time purchase model, but at least you truly owned it. This whole situation is a good lesson: think twice before pouring money into digital files if you believe you’re buying them for life. From what I understand, Sony isn’t offering refunds either.

Footnote: Sony announced in late 2025 that it would delicense and remove hundreds of movies and TV shows from the PlayStation Store starting in early 2026. This affects digital purchases and rentals on PS4 and PS5. The content is licensed, not sold outright, which is standard across digital platforms. No refunds are being provided for previously purchased titles.

Today I read an interesting story about Sony’s digital store for the PlayStation platform.
