This was a surprise today as there is often a lot of people who seek to obtain a green card to work in the US. People often say too the process can feel like it is only meant for the super wealthy due to the process. But how\u2019s about this where today they announced a Gold Card where you could pretty much pay $5 million and get a visa.<\/p>\n
As explained, the “Gold Card” is a new visa program pitched as a replacement for the existing EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program, which has been around since 1990 to encourage foreign investment in the U.S. economy. The EB-5 allows wealthy foreigners to gain permanent residency (a green card) by investing a minimum of $800,000 in economically distressed areas or $1,050,000 elsewhere, provided the investment creates or preserves at least 10 American jobs. The Gold Card, however, takes a different approach.<\/p>\n
Trump has described the Gold Card as costing around $5 million per card, payable directly to the U.S. government. In return, buyers would receive “green card privileges”\u2014meaning permanent residency and work authorization\u2014plus a pathway to U.S. citizenship. Unlike the EB-5, which ties the investment to specific job-creating projects, the Gold Card appears to be a simpler cash-for-residency deal, with Trump suggesting the funds would primarily go toward paying down the national debt. He\u2019s floated the idea of selling up to 1 million cards, potentially generating trillions in revenue, though details on how this would work remain sparse.<\/p>\n
Some call it brilliant as there would potentially be a lot of rich people who opt for where the country makes money and theoretically the person should be really vetted to want to spend that much money. There are criticism that it makes it only available the ultra-rich, but I think that is the point. There are other thoughts where criminal organizations can exploit this too.
