While looking at various stores today there was one that had this huge advertisement saying you can get employee prices if you visit the store which on the outside sounds fantastic. It\u2019s usually the perks of working for a retail business and being able to buy items for a lot less. However, having worked in an electronics store I knew ahead of time that businesses usually make almost nothing on many hardware products like a camera. Instead, they usually make it up through selling accessories which is where the real money comes.<\/p>\n
When I arrived, I was approached by a worker and after talking a bit I actually brought up the fact that I used to work at store and assumed there wasn\u2019t going to be crazy discounts. However, we decided to check on some prices. Sure enough, they weren\u2019t very good as for this company it seemed like employees would usually pay the cost plus 5%. In many cases the savings were only say $5 to $10 versus if you were to buy it at a regular retail price.<\/p>\n
As expected, it was mainly accessories that would provide you with the biggest discounts. Computer cables that would cost $15 could literally be under one dollar as an example. A lot of times the deals come when the manufacturers give retailers an inventive to sell the products at a lower price such as reimbursement for every item sold. That\u2019s often why you see all companies having the same sale prices as an example.<\/p>\n
Another thing I learned is if you are looking for the best discounts with an employee benefit the products that are actually their own company branded items usually have massive margins and in-turn massive discounts if you buy it this way.
