It appeared that the goal of it was to emphasize how there is something disturbing on the fact that yesterday at around 9:46am a CEO’s average salary was more than an average worker’s salary for the entire year. You can view the video below:

<flv href="http://al6400.com/blog/videos/canadaceowage.flv" width="500" height="375" autostart="false" />

I think this screenshot pretty much highlights the entire point of the video:

They say that a CEO’s average salary is $9 million a year which translates to $4,500 an hour. In comparison, an average worker’s salary is $38,010 a year which means in a little over 8 hours a CEO’s salary has pretty much matched that figure. As expected, there were people in the video saying how that is ridiculous and all as they work just as hard.

Generally speaking, I do agree that the wage gap is incredibly large with that example as there seems to be something wrong with the system where people who are just as important to an organization’s success seem to be getting such a smaller financial compensation and maybe companies should re-look their payroll structure in certain cases. On the other side, it irritates me to hear people say how that guy gets this much and so they should be given more. I kind of talked about this mentality with my Anti Union or Pro Union post and most recently my compensation entitlement post.

I’m pretty sure for the most part the person who became a CEO must have gone through a lot to get there. Usually when you ask people if they are willing to go through the necessary sacrifices to get to a place like that they say of course since the pay is so high yet when it comes down to it they break. This segment kind of reminds me on the job outsourcing issues I keep reading in the US and how people were complaining that there were no good paying jobs left. The interesting thing was that they interviewed all these high paying managers who weren’t born in the country and when asked how they got there they just said that they did the things that no one else wanted to do such as start at the bottom for minimum wage as everyone else thought that they were too good to do so.

I’m personally strongly for compensating people for a job well done. At the same time, in my mind it has to be earned as well. Many times with other business owners that I talk to when it comes to compensation they want to be able to pay people say a high salary and it’s just a matter of making the company profitable enough to do so. If they are a small business, most people fail to see just how much it can actually cost a company to find the right candidate which in my opinion is another factor that plays a role on why say a CEO would make more as they are more likely to be with the company longer and so they are rewarded for this.

Again, there are always real examples people can use to dispute those points as there are people who simply treat others as a number within a company, but for myself and most people that I talk to they would genuinely want to offer others say a ridiculously high paying job, but in return you have to prove that you are deserving of it. For example, if you are not convinced yourself that the house you are interested in purchasing will be great for many years to come, most likely you will only want to rent it at most rather than investing so much money into it.

Global TV had this small segment in regards to a CEO’s average wage in Canada compared to a regular employee.
