This was definitely not something I expected to happen. Today I phoned in to a customer service line for the phone service where at the beginning they gave you all these option where you can select a language of choice. That\u2019s normal such as for here in Canada you would often get asked for French or English options. In this case though, the options were for English or Chinese either in Mandarin or Cantonese. So, I selected the English option.<\/p>\n
To my surprise, the person greeted me in Mandarin. As it turned out, the service representative didn\u2019t know English and she then said in a very broken language manner to try and call back later in the morning the next day. So apparently there were absolutely no English speakers for a 24\/7 customer support line. This company does have retail stores in Canada as well where I figure it was a China based company initially. But you would imagine a telecommunications company would have an ample amount of staff that is able to speak English considering they are operating in a predominantly English speaking country.<\/p>\n
Although with that said, for a lot of services that are cheaper than the bigger providers a lot of people expect a less than stellar customer service system where a business offering services for less usually means cutting corners in those departments. For example, some companies don\u2019t even have a toll-free number or phone support as they do everything online to cut cost. But even in those cases you would expect the business to have a team of people who can speak say English.<\/p>\n
They do cater to Chinese speaking people of course. But it makes you wonder where if a business doesn\u2019t make a reasonable effort to accommodate their business to speak the official languages of the particular country they are operating in whether or not that could potentially result in the business being unable to have something like a license to do business. That is the case for many types of business where they are mandated to offer official languages in heir products or services as an example.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
