You could say they need hundreds of accessories where stereotypically the person would just say yes.

So I was thinking about this as recently something interesting happened in terms of my dad being upsold something he didn’t really need. With Father’s day coming up I remember he wanted a Costco membership as his has expired awhile ago and he didn’t want to pay the annual fee without some kind of deal. I noticed there was a good Groupon where for $60 you can get $80 worth of coupons. So I decided to gift that to him.

I gave him a print out of the code and offer where a customer should just bring it into the warehouse store which they would then process. This was the shocker as today I asked if everything went through okay and he said he did. However, he mentioned he had to pay $60 for the executive card. That confused me at first as everything should have been paid for. But then I realized he said executive where the offer was technically for the Gold membership.

So what happened huh? He told me when he showed the associate the paper they knew what it was and then proceeded to ask if he would like the executive card where she could give him $60 off. That membership card costs $120 normally and supposedly offers bonus deals. As well, she apparently pitched him that as an executive card holder he could sign up for their credit card and get a $60 credit. So ultimately he got the executive card and has to pay $60. He did not even get the full $80 credit offer from the intended deal as well.

Now he may potentially have to go back, get a refund and re-process the deal. Funny enough, it actually made me wonder if the code was even redeemed. Now granted the person could have simply just have been doing their job where they are instructed to upsell people. But in these cases I think ethically it’s better to ask clearly whether or not they would like stick with what they came in for or if they truly want to pay more for something they don’t really need but may find beneficial. Otherwise it reminds me of the scenarios I saw often where say commission sales people brag about selling a senior all this useless stuff only to then have say the kids then return it all the next day. That would be a double loss for the business in terms of income and reputation.

Usually when you think of a stereotypical shark salesmen you would be told of stories such as a store workers selling to an unknowledgeable senior high end items that they don’t need because they simply don’t know any better.
