I was reading an article today that talked about how apparently the aviation safety department of Canada had been under investigation as employees apparently passed around a racist video using their work e-mail addresses where it would appear they were entertained by it. The investigation actually lasted about a decade if you can imagine that. In the story it did mention an employee actually brought the concern up only to be shunned and harassed to the point where she had to quit.<\/p>\n
So that brought up the topic on how the only real reason that they started to investigate the incident is because the news media caught wind of this and brought it to light. So of course they now have to respond for public image. Because of that people are likely to still be critical of the whole organization and its leadership. It makes you think where many times if you as a business or organization never supported or took a cause seriously before it becomes mainstream is it too late where anything you do will be seen as just trying to save face per se?<\/p>\n
That\u2019s a tricky topic I thought as in one end you would still want an organization to do what\u2019s right. But I think the key is if you do it too late then you kind of need to do something extraordinary per se to show you mean business as opposed to the perception that you are doing it out of pressure. Makes you wonder what can you do? Even for myself, if I had that mindset about an organization then even donating thousands of dollars to a charity still won\u2019t change that perception.<\/p>\n
The other strategy I have often seen is that a company would then say partner up with a person who is the most vocal about the topic as that can give instant credibility.
