Today there were a ton of news media throwing around numbers of various viruses and the types of deaths they have caused to determine if things like the recent Coronavirus is truly that bad compared to everything else we have seen. What was interesting was how so many places used the same data but told different stories with it.<\/p>\n
For example, there were a lot of places saying how about 3% of all infected people apparently experienced fatal results. This got people extremely worried and to emphasize how bad it is. Then there were other places that used the same 3% figure but added the additional detail that this is based only on people who had to actually go to the hospital. For example, there are apparently a lot of people who are infected per se as they have the virus in them. However, they experience nothing because their immune system is apparently strong enough to deal with it. That would make sense why it seems more deadly for older people as an example where as you age your immune system gets weaker.<\/p>\n
But to me that just shows how important context is whenever you see things like big numbers. It reminds me like in business how one guy can brag that they made $10,000 a month just for selling a certain product as a reason to tell people it\u2019s easy money where they should jump in too. However, upon further inspection they spent say $15,000 in expenses to be able to get that $10,000. Not so impressive anymore huh?
